History of Smithson
How Smithson Got Its Name
Smithson wasn't always called Smithson! It was first known as Wheeler. This name came from Hiram M. Wheeler, who owned the land where the community started. It grew when a train line, the Louisville, New Albany and Chicago Railway, was built through the area.
Later, the name changed to Smithson. This new name honors Bernard G. Smith. He was an early settler in the area and also a veteran from the Civil War.
Smithson also had its own post office. It opened in 1880, helping people send and receive mail. However, the post office closed down in 1931.
