Smithtown is a community located in Suffolk County, New York. It's often called a "hamlet" and a "census-designated place" (CDP), which means it's a specific area used for counting people. In 2020, about 25,629 people lived here. A long time ago, there was a small village called The Landing within Smithtown, but it became part of Smithtown in 1939.
Geography

As of the year 2000, there were 26,901 people living in Smithtown. These people lived in 8,815 households, and 7,245 of these were families. The population density was about 2,266 people per square mile.
Most of the people living in Smithtown were White (96.35%). There were also smaller groups of African American (0.61%), Native American (0.04%), and Asian (1.77%) residents. About 3.38% of the population identified as Hispanic or Latino.

Media, Arts, and Culture
Smithtown is home to two radio stations, WFRS and WWSK, and a TV station called WFTY-DT. You can also read local news in The Times of Smithtown newspaper, which shares stories about the community.
The Smithtown Performing Arts Center is a theater located at 2 East Main Street. This historic building was built in 1933. It used to be a movie theater from 1933 until 2001. In 2002, it was updated to host live shows. In 2022, a group called the Smithtown Performing Arts Council bought the building. They now put on many different live events, including musicals, plays, music, comedy shows, and even offer classes and summer camps.
