In 2020, about 25,629 people lived here. A long time ago, there was a small village called The Landing within Smithtown, but it became part of Smithtown in 1939.

Smithtown is home to two radio stations, WFRS and WWSK, and a TV station called WFTY-DT. You can also read local news in The Times of Smithtown newspaper, which shares stories about the community.

The Smithtown Performing Arts Center is a theater located at 2 East Main Street. This historic building was built in 1933. It used to be a movie theater from 1933 until 2001. In 2002, it was updated to host live shows. In 2022, a group called the Smithtown Performing Arts Council bought the building. They now put on many different live events, including musicals, plays, music, comedy shows, and even offer classes and summer camps.
