Sneedville is a small city in Tennessee, United States. It is the only city in Hancock County and serves as its county seat. In 2020, about 1,282 people lived there.

History of Sneedville
People started settling in the Sneedville area in the 1790s. This was after the American Revolutionary War. Many families moved here from Virginia and North Carolina.
Some of these early settlers were a group known as Melungeons. They were a mix of European, African, and a smaller amount of Native American heritage.
When Hancock County was created in the 1840s, the town was first called Greasy Rock. Later, its name was changed to Sneedville. It was named after William Henry Sneed, a lawyer from Knoxville. He helped defend the new county in court when some people tried to stop it from being formed.

Sneedville is located in a beautiful area of Tennessee. The city covers about 2.3 square miles (5.95 square kilometers) of land. The Clinch River flows right through the city.

Museums and Local History
The Hancock County Tennessee Historical and Genealogical Society is a special group. It is located in the Old County Jail. This organization helps people learn about the community's past.
