The Story of Snow Lake Shores

Early Settlers and Shone's Pond

The first European-American settlers arrived in this area in 1839. John M. Ferrell and his wife moved here from Tennessee. One of their daughters, Emaline, married an Englishman named Joe Shone. They built a house that became known as Shone's Pond. This area was mostly marsh and cypress swamps back then. Sometimes, people called it Shone's Mill or Shone's Mill Pond.

How Snow Lake Shores Began

In 1947, a man named Walter Utley from New York moved to nearby Marshall County. He had a dream to build a resort here. He thought Big Snow Creek, with its three branches, would be perfect. Around 1956, Utley and two other men formed a group. They planned to create a new neighborhood called Snow Lake Shores.

In 1957, they built a dam on a local stream. This created Big Snow Lake. Snow Lake Shores officially started in 1958. It was a private community designed for vacations and year-round living. It was promoted as a safe and friendly place for families. A volunteer fire department was started in 1974 to help keep everyone safe.

Becoming an Official Town

For 38 years, Snow Lake Shores was a private community. But in 1996, it became an official town. This was a big step! Becoming a town meant they could get money from the government. This money could be used to improve roads and build a new water system.

Eddie Koen was chosen as the first mayor of Snow Lake Shores. Five aldermen also helped lead the new town. They served until the first local elections were held in October 1996.

Even though about 300 people live in Snow Lake Shores all year, the population can grow a lot in the summer. During the warmer months, over 900 people might be in the community. This includes seasonal residents and vacationers who come to enjoy the lake.
