Scientific classification
Genus:
Eriogonum
Species:
nervulosum

The Eriogonum nervulosum, also known as Snow Mountain buckwheat, is a special type of wild buckwheat plant. It's quite rare and only grows in a few places in the North Coast Ranges of California. Most of these places are in Lake County. This plant gets its name from Snow Mountain, a peak in that area.

This plant is endemic to California. This means it naturally grows only in this specific region and nowhere else in the world. In the wild, you can find it growing in its native mountains, often in a unique type of ground called serpentine soils. These soils are special because they have high levels of certain minerals that many other plants can't handle.

What is Snow Mountain Buckwheat Like?

This plant is a low-growing perennial herb. This means it's a small plant that lives for more than two years. It forms flat mats of rounded leaves. The underside of its leaves feels soft and woolly.

The Snow Mountain buckwheat grows straight stems that are about 15 centimeters (about 6 inches) tall. At the top of these stems, you'll see round clusters of flowers. These flowers can be a pale yellow color or even a dark pink.

Growing Snow Mountain Buckwheat

Sometimes, people successfully grow Snow Mountain buckwheat in their gardens. It's often planted in rock gardens. These are special gardens designed to look like rocky mountain areas, which is perfect for a plant that loves serpentine soils and mountain environments.
