Snow Summit is a fun ski resort in Southern California. It opened in 1952. You can find it in the San Bernardino Mountains.

Snow Summit is right by Big Bear Lake. Its sister resort, Bear Mountain, is also nearby. These two resorts work together. They are known as Big Bear Mountain Resorts (BBMR).

Snow Summit is a popular place for skiing and snowboarding. Many people from the Los Angeles area visit it. It has a vertical drop of 1,209 feet. There are 240 acres of land for skiing. All of this area can be covered with man-made snow.

In 2014, Mammoth Mountain bought both Bear Mountain and Snow Summit. This cost $38 million. Later, in 2017, a new company bought them. This company is called Alterra Mountain Company.

Snow Summit and Bear Mountain: A Partnership

For many years, Snow Summit and Goldmine Mountain were separate. They were less than two miles apart. In 1988, a big ski company bought Goldmine. They changed its name to Bear Mountain. This company made many improvements. Bear Mountain became a strong competitor to Snow Summit.

Then, in 2002, Snow Summit bought Bear Mountain. The two resorts became one company. Now, Snow Summit and Bear Mountain are marketed together. They are part of Big Bear Mountain Resorts.

If you buy a lift ticket for one resort, it works at the other. There is also a free bus service. This bus takes people between Snow Summit and Bear Mountain. This makes it easy to enjoy both places.

In 2014, the owners of the Mammoth Mountain ski resort bought both Snow Summit and Bear Mountain.

How Snow Summit Makes Snow

Snow Summit has a very large snowmaking system. It cost millions of dollars to build. This system uses water from Big Bear Lake. It can cover all the ski trails with artificial snow.

This is possible when the weather is cold enough. The system helps make sure there is snow. This means you can ski or snowboard all winter long.
