About the Snow Raspberry
The snow raspberry is a special plant known for its small size and pretty berries. It's a fun plant to learn about because it's quite unique!
Where It Grows
You can find the snow raspberry growing in specific areas of North America. It is native to British Columbia in Canada. In the United States, it grows in Washington, Idaho, and the very northern part of California. It likes these cool, moist environments.
What It Looks Like
The Rubus nivalis is a small, prickly shrub. It usually grows to be only about 15 centimeters (or 6 inches) tall. Its stems like to creep along the ground, almost like a carpet.
Its leaves stay green all year round, so they are called evergreen. Some of the leaves are simple, meaning they are just one leaf blade. Other leaves are compound, which means they are made up of three smaller leaf parts called leaflets.
When it blooms, the snow raspberry has beautiful pink or magenta-colored flowers. After the flowers, it produces red fruits. These fruits are small and have only about 3 to 10 tiny sections called drupelets. A drupelet is like a tiny, individual berry part that makes up a larger berry, like in a regular raspberry.
