Snowshoe Lake is a lovely lake in Ontario, Canada. It's a part of the Madawaska River system. This means its waters eventually flow into the Madawaska River. The lake is found in two different areas: South Algonquin (in Nipissing District) and Madawaska Valley (in Renfrew County).

Discover Snowshoe Lake

Snowshoe Lake is a natural body of water. It is surrounded by the beautiful landscapes of Ontario. Lakes like this are important for the environment. They provide homes for many plants and animals. They also offer places for people to enjoy nature.

Where is Snowshoe Lake Located?

Snowshoe Lake is quite far from big cities. It is about 11.5 kilometres (7.1 mi) southeast of a small place called Madawaska. It's also about 16 kilometres (10 mi) southwest of the community of Barry's Bay. The lake stretches across two different regions. A small part of its northwest tip is in South Algonquin. The rest of the lake is in Madawaska Valley.

What Makes Snowshoe Lake Special?

Snowshoe Lake is not a huge lake, but it's a good size. It measures about 650 metres (2,133 ft) long. It is also around 330 metres (1,083 ft) wide. The lake sits at an elevation of 334 metres (1,096 ft) above sea level. This means it is quite high up.

The main way water leaves Snowshoe Lake is through a small, unnamed creek. This creek flows into Sand Bay. Sand Bay is on the west side of Bark Lake. Bark Lake is also part of the Madawaska River system. Eventually, all this water makes its way to the Ottawa River.

The Madawaska River System

The Madawaska River is a large river in Ontario. It flows for many kilometers. A "drainage basin" is like a giant bowl. All the rain and snow that falls in that bowl eventually flows into one main river. Snowshoe Lake is part of the Madawaska River's drainage basin. This connection shows how all water bodies are linked.

Another Snowshoe Lake?

It can be a bit confusing, but there is another lake also named Snowshoe Lake. This other lake is also part of the Madawaska River system. However, it is located about 80 kilometres (50 mi) southeast. This second Snowshoe Lake is found in Frontenac County. So, if you hear about Snowshoe Lake, make sure you know which one people are talking about!
