Where Does the Soan River Start?
The Soan River begins its journey near a small village called Bun. This village is located in the foothills of Patriata and Murree. As it flows, the river provides water to the Simblee Dam. This dam is a big reservoir that supplies water to Islamabad, the capital city of Pakistan.
The Amazing Soan Cut
Near a place called Pharwala Fort, the Soan River does something incredible! It cuts right through a tall mountain range. This special spot is known as the Swan Cut. It's amazing because it shows that the Soan River was flowing there even before the mountains rose up. As the mountains slowly grew taller over millions of years, the river kept its path, carving its way through the rising rock.
The River's Journey and Life
The Soan River continues its path, and other streams join it. The Ling stream, which flows through Lehtrar and Kahuta, meets the Soan River near Sihala. The Islamabad Highway crosses the Soan River near Sihala, where a famous bridge is built over it. Another well-known stream, the Lai stream, also joins the Soan River near a place called Swaan Camp.
After flowing for a long and winding path, the Soan River finally reaches Kalabagh. Here, it flows into the mighty Indus River. Even though it's a relatively small river, the Soan River is more than 250 kilometers (about 155 miles) long!
Uses of the Soan River
Because the Soan River flows through mountains and has a shallow bed, it's not used much for watering crops. However, you can still find old-fashioned flour mills near Chakian. These mills use the river's water power to grind wheat into flour.
Animals in the River
Fishing is not a big job here, but there are fish in the river. The main type of fish found in the Soan River is called Rohu. You might also spot Kingfisher birds hunting for fish along the riverbanks.
