Social Liberal Party (Brazil) facts for kids
The Social Liberal Party (often called PSL) was a political party in Brazil. It was known for its right-wing ideas. This means it often supported traditional values and less government involvement in the economy.
The party started on October 30, 1994. Its leader was Luciano Bivar.
For many years, the PSL had ideas that were called "social-liberalism." This is a mix of social fairness and economic freedom. However, around 2018, a well-known politician named Jair Bolsonaro joined the party. After he joined, the party's ideas changed a lot. It became more focused on strong conservative and right-wing views. These new ideas included:
- Economic liberalism: Believing in free markets and less government control over businesses.
- Monarchism: Some members supported the idea of a king or queen ruling the country again.
- Anti-communism: Being strongly against communism, which is a political and economic system where the government controls everything.
The 2018 Election Victory
In the 2018 Presidential election in Brazil, the PSL became very famous. This was because Jair Bolsonaro ran for president as their candidate. He won the election, becoming the President of Brazil.
Bolsonaro defeated his opponent, Fernando Haddad. Haddad was from the Workers' Party, which has more left-wing ideas. Bolsonaro received a lot of support from different groups of people. These included:
- People who are Evangelical Christians.
- People from the middle class.
- Farmers.
- Many people living in the South of Brazil.
Party Changes
After the 2018 election, the PSL went through more changes. In 2022, the party merged with another party called Democrats. They formed a new party called Brazil Union. This meant the Social Liberal Party no longer existed on its own.
