The Socialist Alliance of Andalusia (known as Alianza Socialista de Andalucía, or ASA) was a secret political group in Andalusia, Spain. It was active during the final years of Francoism, which was a time when Spain was ruled by a dictator. This group supported Andalusian nationalism and had left-wing ideas.

What Was the Socialist Alliance of Andalusia?

The Socialist Alliance of Andalusia (ASA) was a political organization that worked in secret. It wanted more power and recognition for the region of Andalusia in Spain. The group believed in socialism, which is an idea about how society should be fair for everyone. They also stood against fascism, a type of strict and controlling government.

How Did ASA Start?

ASA officially began in 1971. Before that, some of its members were part of a group called Compromiso Político de Andalucía (Political Commitment of Andalusia), which started in 1965. Key people like Alejandro Rojas-Marcos were involved from the beginning.

ASA was very important because it was the first group to promote Andalusian nationalism after 1936. That year, a famous Andalusian nationalist leader named Blas Infante was killed.

What Did ASA Do?

In June 1976, ASA held its "1st Andalusian Congress" at the University of Málaga. This meeting was a big step. It meant the group was no longer working in secret. It also helped to reorganize the whole nationalist movement in Andalusia.

One of ASA's most well-known actions was publishing a paper called "Por un Poder Andaluz" (For an Andalusian Power) in 1976. This paper said that Andalusia needed its own special laws, called a Statute of Autonomy. They believed this was the only way for Andalusia to gain more control over its own politics and economy.

Becoming the Socialist Party of Andalusia

After the 1976 congress, the Socialist Alliance of Andalusia changed its name. It became the Socialist Party of Andalusia (PSA). This new party continued the work of ASA, pushing for more self-governance for Andalusia.
