How Society Tea Began
A Tea Journey Starts in Mumbai
The story of Society Tea began with a person named Hiravan Pranjivandas. He was the founder of the company. In 1924, he started as a tea seller in Mumbai. He worked in a famous area called Masjid Bunder Chai Galli. This street was known as a big place for tea in Maharashtra. Traders from all over the state came here to buy tea. They would then sell it in their local areas.
During this time, Hiravan Pranjivandas also started trading tea with countries in the Middle East. This helped his business grow.
From Wholesaler to Brand
In 1933, Hiravan Pranjivandas officially started his own company. He named it Hasmukhrai & Co. His goal was to sell tea directly to the people of Mumbai. He opened his very first shop in an area called Kalbadevi.
By the late 1980s, Hasmukhrai & Co became a very important company in Mumbai's tea market. In 1991, the company made a big decision. They noticed that people were starting to prefer tea that was already packaged. This was more convenient for customers. So, the company decided to start selling tea in packages. This packaged tea was first sold in Mumbai. Later, it became available all over Maharashtra. This new packaged tea was given the name Society Tea.
