The Story of Society Tea
The person who started Society Tea was Hiravan Pranjivandas. He began by selling tea in large amounts in 1924. This was in Mumbai's famous Masjid Bunder Chai Galli. This street was known as a big tea market in Maharashtra. Traders from all over the state came there. They bought tea to sell in their own towns.
Around this time, Mr. Pranjivandas also started trading tea with countries in the Middle East. In 1933, he created a company called Hasmukhrai & Co. His goal was to sell tea directly to the people of Mumbai. He opened his very first shop in Kalbadevi.
By the late 1980s, Hasmukhrai & Co became a top company. It was a leader in Mumbai's tea industry. In 1991, the company decided to start selling tea in packages. They felt that customers would find this easier. This packaged tea was first sold in Mumbai. Later, it was sold across Maharashtra under the name Society Tea.
