The Sofia Albertina Church (called Sofia Albertina kyrka in Swedish) is a very important church building in Landskrona, Sweden. It belongs to the Church of Sweden and was first opened in 1788. It took a bit longer to finish completely, finally ready in 1816.

This church is quite special because it has two tall towers. This is unusual for a church that isn't a main church for a bishop. A famous architect named Carl Hårleman designed the church. He passed away in 1753, the same year the old church was taken down. Some small changes might have been made to his original plans.

A Look Back: The Church's History

The Old Church of Landskrona

Landskrona was first founded as a Danish town a long time ago. Around 1430, a very large church was built there. It was called Saint John the Baptist's Church. This church was huge! In fact, only the Lund Cathedral was bigger in the whole region of Scania.

This old church was used for more than 330 years. But then, something unexpected happened. In 1720, Scania became part of Sweden. A military commander decided that the church's tall tower could be a problem. He worried that if cannons were placed on top, they could threaten the nearby Landskrona Citadel.

Why the Old Church Was Demolished

Because of this worry, the beautiful old medieval church was torn down in 1753. It was a big change for the town.

Building the New Sofia Albertina Church

Even though the old church was gone, it took a while for a new one to be built. The first stone for the new Sofia Albertina Church was laid in 1754. However, the town of Landskrona didn't have a proper church for a long time, from 1754 to 1787.

Finally, the new church was opened in 1788. It wasn't fully completed until 1812.

The Church's Special Bells

The Sofia Albertina Church has a very special set of bells. It has a carillon with 43 bells! A carillon is like a giant musical instrument made of bells. These bells were built and put into the church in 1967 by a company called Bergholtz Bellfoundry [sv].
