The Sogamoso River is an important river located in northern Colombia. It flows into the larger Magdalena River, which then carries its waters all the way to the Caribbean Sea. A big dam called the Sogamoso Dam was built on this river near the city of Bucaramanga and was finished in 2014.

What is the Sogamoso River?

The Sogamoso River is a natural waterway found in the northern part of Colombia. It isn't just one river from the start! It actually forms when two other rivers, the Suárez River and the Chicamocha River, join together. This happens after they both travel through the impressive Chicamocha Canyon.

Where Does the Sogamoso River Flow?

Once the Sogamoso River is formed, it continues its journey until it meets the mighty Magdalena River. This meeting point is located between two towns: Puerto Wilches and Barrancabermeja. The Magdalena River is one of Colombia's longest rivers, and it eventually empties into the Caribbean Sea. So, the Sogamoso River's water travels a long way, from the mountains of Colombia all the way to the ocean!

The Sogamoso Dam

The Sogamoso Dam is a large structure built across the Sogamoso River. It was completed in 2014. Dams like this are often built to help control the flow of water, prevent floods, and sometimes to generate electricity for homes and businesses.
