Sohag Gazi (born August 5, 1991) is a talented cricketer from Bangladesh. He is known for being an all-rounder, meaning he is good at both batting and bowling.

He started playing Test matches in 2012 against the West Indies. In his very first Test match, he took six wickets, which is a great start! Sohag Gazi made history by being the first and only player to score a century (100 runs) and take a hat-trick (three wickets in a row) in the same Test match. He also achieved this amazing feat twice in first-class matches.

Playing for Local Teams

Sohag Gazi is a spinner. He began his first-class cricket journey in January 2009. He played for the Barisal team against Chittagong. He became a regular player for Barisal in the seasons that followed.

Early Success in Domestic Cricket

In the 2012–13 season, Sohag Gazi started very strongly. He scored 119 runs in his first game against Khulna. This great performance helped him get selected for the national Test team for the first time.

He also made his One Day debut in October 2010. He helped his team, Barisal, reach the final of the National Cricket One Day League that year.

Playing for Different Clubs

Sohag Gazi has played for many different teams in Bangladesh's domestic leagues.

  • In 2011, he played for the Bangladesh Academy and Bangladesh A team.
  • He was the top wicket-taker for Central Zone in the 2017–18 Bangladesh Cricket League. He took 29 wickets in six matches.
  • In October 2018, he took his 21st five-wicket haul in first-class cricket. He was the leading wicket-taker for Barisal Division in that tournament.
  • He also played for the Rangpur Riders and Sylhet Thunder in the Bangladesh Premier League.
  • He was the top wicket-taker for Mohammedan Sporting Club in the 2018–19 Dhaka Premier Division Cricket League.

Sohag Gazi's International Career

It is quite rare to find an off-spinner like Sohag Gazi in Bangladesh cricket. He grew up near the Bay of Bengal and became known as a promising slow bowler. He has a short run-up, but his bowling action is very quick and smooth.

Joining the National Team

Sohag Gazi was called up to the National Cricket Academy and then the Bangladesh A team. He performed well for the A team, even though he faced a challenge in 2012. An umpire reported his bowling action for a slight bend in his elbow when he bowled faster deliveries. After some checks, he was cleared to play again.

He started the 2012–13 season by taking nine wickets in a match. In one game, he took seven wickets in the second innings, including a hat-trick! Amazingly, Sohag also scored a century in the same match. This made him only the thirteenth cricketer ever to score a century and take a hat-trick in a first-class match.

Test Debut and Records

Because of his excellent performances, Sohag Gazi was chosen for the Bangladesh team. He played his first Test match against the West Indies in November 2012.

In that match, he bowled the very first ball. The famous West Indies batsman, Chris Gayle, hit that ball for a six. This was the first time in cricket history that the first ball of a Test match was hit for a six! Even with that start, Sohag Gazi finished the innings with three wickets.

His bowling performance of 4 wickets for 29 runs against the West Indies in Khulna was even nominated as one of the best One Day International bowling performances of the year by ESPNCricinfo.

Making History: Century and Hat-trick

In October 2013, during a Test match against New Zealand, Sohag Gazi scored his first Test century. He scored 101 runs and was not out. Bangladesh scored 501 runs in that innings.

After his century, he took a hat-trick in New Zealand's innings! He dismissed Corey Anderson, BJ Watling, and Doug Bracewell with three balls in a row. This made him the first person in history to score a century and take a hat-trick in the same Test match. He was also the second Bangladeshi player to take a Test hat-trick, after Alok Kapali.

ICC Ban and Return

In 2014, Sohag Gazi was temporarily stopped from bowling in international cricket. This happened because his bowling action was found to be outside the rules set by the ICC. The rules state that a bowler's arm should not bend more than 15 degrees when bowling.

He was reported during a tour in the West Indies in August 2014. Tests showed that all his deliveries went over the 15-degree limit. After working on his bowling action, he was later cleared to bowl again in international matches.
