Sololá is an important city in Guatemala. It is the main city of the department of Sololá. It is also the center of the Sololá municipality. You can find Sololá very close to the beautiful Lake Atitlán.

The city's name, Sololá, comes from an older name, Tz'olojya. This was its name before the Spanish arrived. About 14,000 people live in the city center. However, the wider municipality also includes four villages: Los Encuentros, El Tablón, San Jorge la Laguna, and Argueta. There are also 59 smaller communities in the area.

Sololá sits high up on a mountainside, about 2,114 meters above sea level. It looks down over Lake Atitlán, which is about 600 meters below. It is a busy market town in the highlands. It is also the main office for the Catholic Bishopric that covers the Sololá and Chimaltenango areas.

Most people living in Sololá are Kaqchikel Maya. The only exception is in Argueta, where most people are K'iche' Maya. Many men and women in Sololá still wear their traditional Mayan clothing every day.

Sololá is home to several international groups. These organizations help the local community in different ways. Some of these groups include Manna Project International, Friendship Bridge, Mayan Families, and Love Futbol.
