Who Are the Somena People?
The Somena are one of several groups of Indigenous people who have lived in the Cowichan Valley for a very long time. Their traditional language, Hul̓q̓umín̓um̓, is part of the larger Coast Salish language family. This language connects them to many other Indigenous communities along the coast.
Becoming Part of the Cowichan Tribes
Long ago, the Somena were one of seven distinct groups or "nations." Over time, these groups were brought together to form one larger community. This new community is known today as the Cowichan Tribes. The name "Cowichan" comes from their shared home, the Cowichan Valley and Cowichan Bay.
The Seven Nations
The other groups that joined with the Somena to form the Cowichan Tribes include:
- The Quamichan (also called Kw’amutsun), who were the largest group.
- The Clemclemaluts (L’uml’umuluts).
- The Comiaken (Qwum’yiqun’).
- The Khenipsen (Hinupsum).
- The Kilpahlas (Tl’ulpalus).
- The Koksilah (Hwulqwselu).
These seven groups now work together as the Cowichan Tribes. They share their history, culture, and future.
Living in the Cowichan Valley
The Cowichan Valley is a special place for the Somena and other Cowichan Tribes members. It is known for its rivers, forests, and the nearby ocean. For thousands of years, the people here have lived off the land and sea. They have hunted, fished, and gathered plants. This way of life has shaped their culture and traditions.
Culture and Traditions
The Somena, as part of the Cowichan Tribes, have a vibrant culture. Their traditions include storytelling, art, and ceremonies. They pass down knowledge from elders to younger generations. This helps keep their language and customs alive. Learning about their history helps us understand the importance of respecting all cultures.
