Son Ferrer is a modern village located on the island of Majorca. It is part of the Calvià area in Spain. This village is found within the Balearic Islands, which is a group of islands that form an autonomous community of Spain.
Son Ferrer is about 20 kilometers (12 miles) away from Palma de Mallorca, the capital city. It has several neighbors, including La Porrassa to the east and El Toro to the west. Santa Ponsa is to the northwest, and a wooded area called Cala Figuera is also nearby. The village is surrounded by pine forests and farms.
Son Ferrer is split into two main parts: a commercial area for shops and businesses, and a residential area where people live. In 2008, about 5,666 people lived there.
The village has cool facilities for its residents. There's a community swimming pool that was built in 2008. There's also a golf course located to the south and west, close to a hill called Puig de Saragossa. The Paseo Calviá, a long walking path that goes through the whole municipality, also passes through Son Ferrer.
One interesting thing about Son Ferrer is how its streets are named. Almost every street, except for one called Ca'n Ferrer, is named after a bird! The streets in the commercial area have names of large birds, while the streets in the residential areas are named after smaller birds. The village even has its own football team, called CF Son Ferrer.
History of Son Ferrer
Before Son Ferrer became the village it is today, the area was known as Can Ferrer. It had a traditional Majorcan farmhouse and many trees like almond, mulberry, fig, and carob.
The land belonged to a person named Antonio Segui Ferrer. He sold the land to the local government of Calvià. The government then planned how the village would be built. They also managed the sale of the land plots to people who wanted to build homes there.
Ancient Discoveries in Son Ferrer
Son Ferrer is about 2 miles (3 kilometers) from the Puig de sa Morisca Archaeological Park. This park has very old remains from ancient times, including large stone structures called megaliths and part of a talaiot (an ancient stone tower).
Archaeologists have also found an important burial site in Son Ferrer. This site is called the tomb of Son Ferrer. Experts from different groups, including the University of the Balearic Islands, worked together to dig up and study this site from 2000 to 2009.
During the Bronze Age and a later period called the Late Talaiótico, this tomb was used as a necropolis, which is like a large cemetery. The remains of over a hundred people were found there, including babies. There are also remains of ancient buildings called naviformes located in the wooded area between Son Ferrer and the golf course.
