How Sonho de Valsa Started
Sonho de Valsa was first made by Lacta in 1938. Back then, you could buy these bonbons in bakeries. They were mostly aimed at women. The name Sonho de Valsa sounds romantic, just like other Brazilian candies such as Serenata de Amor (which means "Love Serenade"). Because of its name, this chocolate quickly became a symbol of love. Giving a Sonho de Valsa to someone you care about is seen as a sweet gesture between couples.
The food part of Kraft Foods bought Lacta in 1996. After that, they started to make Sonho de Valsa in different sizes and types for stores. Today, Sonho de Valsa is the most well-known candy eaten in Brazil. More than 21 billion of these candies have been sold so far!
The Classic Sonho de Valsa Wrapper
The wrapper of Sonho de Valsa is famous and hasn't changed much over many years. Until 2019, the candy was wrapped in paper that looked like a rose. It had a picture of a couple dancing. On the sides, there was a small part of a song called Ein Walzertraum (A Waltz Dream).
Before Brazil started making cellophane, Sonho de Valsa was wrapped in paper. Then, it was covered with clear red cellophane. A black seal with the candy's name and a drawing of a guitar finished the first wrapper.
In 2001, some small changes were made to the wrapper. The way the letters looked, and the instruments and clothes of the dancing couple were updated a little.
In the 1990s, Sonho de Valsa became more than just a candy; it became a whole brand! People loved the product so much that new flavors and different sizes were created. Now, you can find Sonho de Valsa in many types of packages. These include packs with five chocolates, larger one-pound bags, special collectible tins, and even heart-shaped boxes with mini chocolates.
The newer packaging also helped keep the candy safe and clean. It made it harder for small creatures like ants to get inside. It also helped prevent people from tampering with the candy before you bought it.
Newer Packaging Changes
In April 2011, the chocolate's wrapper had its biggest change yet. Kraft spent two years working on a new package. This new wrapper had a special seal and was folded on the sides. The main goal of this new packaging was to keep the chocolate crunchy for longer. This was especially important in warmer and humid places. It used technology similar to the wrappers for Easter eggs. This change was also part of a plan to sell the chocolate in more foreign countries, especially those next to Brazil. However, the colors and designs on the wrapper stayed the same.
