Sonthofen is a town in Germany. It is special because it is the most southerly town in the entire country! You can find Sonthofen in the beautiful Oberallgäu region, right in the middle of the Bavarian Alps. While Oberstdorf is a bit further south, it is not considered a town. In 2005, Sonthofen received a cool award. It was named "Alpenstadt des Jahres," which means "Alpine City of the Year." This shows how important and beautiful it is as an Alpine town.
A Look at Sonthofen's History
Sonthofen has an interesting past, including events from World War II. During the war, the town was bombed two times. This happened partly because a special building called the Ordensburg Sonthofen was located there. This building was used to train young boys for certain groups during that time. After the war, Sonthofen continued to grow and develop. The town officially received its town rights on August 18, 1963. This was an important step in its history.
