Sonya Alicia Curry (born May 30, 1966) is an American educator. She is famous for being the mother of basketball stars Stephen Curry and Seth Curry.
Early Life and Sports
Sonya Alicia Adams was born in Radford, Virginia. She grew up with very little money. In high school, Sonya was a talented athlete. She played volleyball, ran track and field, and played basketball.
She went to Virginia Tech as a student athlete. There, she played volleyball and was very good at it. She even earned special honors in the Metro Conference. Sonya earned a degree in education. Her college roommate said that the volleyball team was popular partly because of Sonya.
Sonya met her future husband, Dell Curry, at Virginia Tech. She was watching the men's basketball practice when they first saw each other.
Her Career and School
Sonya Curry is the president of the Christian Montessori School of Lake Norman. She started this school in Huntersville, North Carolina, in 1995. Her own children went to this school.
Family and Basketball Fame
Sonya Curry has three children. Her oldest son, Stephen Curry, plays basketball for the Golden State Warriors. He holds the record for the most three-pointers in the NBA. Stephen has won four NBA championships with his team.
Her younger son, Seth Curry, plays for the Charlotte Hornets. Her daughter, Sydel, played volleyball at Elon University. Sonya Curry is also a grandmother to nine grandchildren.
People started noticing Sonya during basketball games when Stephen was in college. He played for Davidson in the 2008 NCAA tournament. Later, when Seth played for Duke, her reactions during his games became popular online. Her celebration of Seth's three-point shot in 2013 even trended on Twitter.
Because she is often seen at Golden State games, Sonya Curry has been called NBA "royalty." She has talked in interviews about how she raised professional athletes. She also shares how her family handles their sons' success.
On August 23, 2021, Sonya and her husband, Dell, shared that they were getting divorced. They had been married for 33 years.
