Sophia Ivy Rose Dunkley (born on 16 July 1998) is a talented English cricket player. She plays for teams like Surrey, Welsh Fire, and Melbourne Stars. Sophia also represents the England national team.
She is a right-handed batter and bowls right-arm leg break (a type of spin bowling). Sophia started her county career in July 2012 for Middlesex. She was just 14 years old then. Her first game for England was in 2018 against Bangladesh. In 2020, she moved from Middlesex to join Surrey. In June 2021, Sophia received her first main contract with the England team. That same month, she made history by becoming the first black woman to play Test cricket for England.
Early Life and School Days
Sophia Dunkley was born in Lambeth, Greater London, on 16 July 1998. She grew up in north London. Sophia shared that a neighbor first introduced her to cricket. They lived in a quiet street and played outside together. Both of them joined a boys' cricket club, and that's how her journey began.
She started playing at Finchley Cricket Club. Later, she joined Middlesex. Sophia went to Mill Hill School on a sports scholarship. She was the first girl ever to play for the school's main team with the boys. After school, she studied sports science at Loughborough University.
Playing for Clubs in England
Sophia started her club career with Middlesex in 2012. Her first match was a Twenty20 Cup game against Sussex. She played regularly for Middlesex and also took part in England's young player programs.
Sophia became one of Middlesex's best players. She won the club's Player of the Year award in 2017 and 2019. In the 2019 Women's County Championship, she scored two centuries (100 runs in one game). She was the top run-scorer in that tournament with 451 runs. In February 2020, she announced her move to Surrey.
Sophia also played in the Women's Cricket Super League. She played for Surrey Stars from 2016 to 2018. In 2019, she played for Lancashire Thunder. Her best season with the Stars was in 2018. She took 6 wickets and scored 98 runs, including 66 runs against Southern Vipers. She also helped Surrey Stars win their first title in the final.
In 2020, Sophia played for the South East Stars in the 2020 Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy. She scored an impressive 97 runs in one match. This helped her team get their first win in the competition. In 2021, Southern Brave picked her for the first season of The Hundred. She continued to play for Southern Brave in the 2022 season.
Playing for England
In October 2018, Sophia was chosen for the England squad. This was for the 2018 ICC Women's World Twenty20 tournament. She made her international debut in England's second game against Bangladesh. England reached the final of the tournament but lost to Australia. Sophia scored 35 runs in a game against the West Indies.
In February 2019, Sophia was part of the England squad for tours to India and Sri Lanka. She took her first international wicket in a Twenty20 game against Sri Lanka.
After not being in the England squads for a while, Sophia was called up in June 2020. She joined a group of players training for international matches after the COVID-19 pandemic. She played two Twenty20 International (T20I) matches against the West Indies. She was batting when England won the series 5–0.
In February 2021, Sophia was part of England's squad for their tour of New Zealand. She played in all three T20I matches. She scored 26 runs in the final match, helping England set a good score. In June 2021, Sophia was selected for England's Test squad. This was for a match against India. She made her Test debut on 16 June 2021. Later that month, she also made her Women's One Day International (WODI) debut against India. In the next match, she scored her first half-century in WODIs.
In December 2021, Sophia was chosen for England's tour to Australia. There, they played for the Women's Ashes. In February 2022, she was part of England's team for the 2022 Women's Cricket World Cup in New Zealand. In July 2022, in a match against South Africa, Sophia scored her first century (107 runs) in a WODI match. Later that month, she was named in England's team for the cricket tournament at the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham.
Sophia was part of the England squad for the 2024 ICC Women's T20 World Cup. She was also named in England's squad for their tour to South Africa in November 2024. Most recently, she was selected for the England squad for the 2025 Women's Ashes series in Australia.
