The History of Soulsbyville
Soulsbyville gets its name from a person named Ben Soulsby. He lived in the area during the exciting time of the California Gold Rush. Ben Soulsby found gold, and a mine and gold processing plant were named after him. The town, a school, and even a ridge and a ditch in the area also took his name.

Soulsbyville is officially recognized as a California Historical Landmark. This means it's a place with special historical importance in California.
California Historical Landmark number 420 tells us:
- NO. 420 SOULSBYVILLE - This is the location of the famous Soulsby Mine, which was discovered by Benjamin Soulsby. Soulsbyville was the first community in Tuolumne County that was created (in 1855) entirely because of a deep mine. The first people to work in this mine were skilled miners from Cornwall, England. The first group of 499 Cornish miners arrived in 1858.
