The Story of South Arapahoe County
How Colorado Counties Changed in 1901
Back in 1901, the people who make laws for Colorado, called the Colorado General Assembly, decided to make some big changes. They voted to split up a large area known as Arapahoe County into three new parts.
- One part became the new City and County of Denver. This meant the city and the county government were combined into one.
- Another part became a new area called Adams County.
- The last part was what was left of the old Arapahoe County. This section was given a new name: South Arapahoe County.
Why the Change Took Time
It wasn't a quick change! The highest court in Colorado, the Colorado Supreme Court, had to make a decision about it. There were also new laws and a special vote by the people (called a referendum). All these steps caused a delay. The new areas finally officially started on November 15, 1902.
A Short-Lived Name Change
South Arapahoe County didn't keep its name for very long. On April 11, 1903, the Colorado lawmakers decided to change the name back. So, South Arapahoe County became Arapahoe County once again.
