The South Branch of the Mad River is a small mountain stream located on the border between Maine and New Hampshire in the United States. It flows through the eastern part of the White Mountains. This stream is about 1.1 miles (1.8 km) long.
It is a tributary of the Mad River. A tributary is a smaller stream or river that flows into a larger one. The Mad River then flows into the Cold River. All these rivers are part of the larger Saco River watershed. A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into a common river, lake, or ocean.
Where the River Starts and Ends
The South Branch Mad River begins in New Hampshire. It starts on the slopes of West Royce Mountain. From there, it flows east, crossing into Maine.
The stream joins the Mad River in a place called Evans Notch. This is a valley located in the White Mountains. The South Branch meets the Mad River just a short distance before the Mad River itself flows into the Cold River.
