The Mad River is a small, short river located in the United States. It flows along the border between the states of Maine and New Hampshire. This river is found within the eastern part of the White Mountains, which are famous for their beautiful scenery.

The Mad River is about 1.4-mile-long (2.3 km). It is a tributary of the Cold River. A tributary is a smaller river or stream that flows into a larger one. The Cold River then flows into the Saco River. This means the Mad River is part of the Saco River's watershed. A watershed is an area of land where all the water drains into a common river, lake, or ocean.

Where the Mad River Starts

The Mad River begins in New Hampshire. It starts in a special spot called a col. A col is a low point or a pass between two mountains. For the Mad River, this col is located between West Royce Mountain and East Royce Mountain.

The starting point of the river is very high up. It is about 2,500 feet (760 m) above sea level. Sea level is the average height of the ocean's surface.

The River's Journey

From its high starting point, the Mad River flows quickly downhill. It rushes south along the sides of Royce Mountain. As it flows, it soon crosses into the state of Maine.

One exciting part of the river's journey is Mad River Falls. This is a beautiful waterfall where the water drops about 70-foot-tall (21 m). It's like a natural staircase for the water.

Where the Mad River Ends

The Mad River continues its journey until it meets the Cold River. This meeting point is in a place called Evans Notch. Evans Notch is a narrow mountain pass that cuts through the White Mountains. A mountain pass is a path or road that goes through a mountain range.

The Mad River joins the Cold River at an elevation of about 790 ft (240 m) above sea level.
