Evans Notch is a special place in the White Mountains of Maine, United States. It's a mountain pass, which means it's a low point between mountains that people can travel through. This notch is about 1,410 feet (430 meters) high. It's located only about one mile (1.6 kilometers) east of the New Hampshire border. Evans Notch is the easternmost pass through the White Mountains. Other famous passes to the west include Carter Notch and Pinkham Notch.

Rivers and Water Flow

Water flows out of Evans Notch in two main directions. To the south, the Cold River starts here. This river eventually joins the Saco River, which then flows into the Gulf of Maine. The Gulf of Maine is part of the Atlantic Ocean. Towns like Saco and Biddeford are near where the Saco River meets the ocean.

A smaller stream called the Mad River also joins the Cold River. It has cool waterfalls called Mad River Falls. To the north, Evans Brook flows out of the notch. This brook joins the Wild River, which then flows north into the Androscoggin River. The Androscoggin River travels east and south, eventually meeting the Kennebec River at a place called Merrymeeting Bay. This bay is north of Bath, Maine.

Traveling Through the Notch

Maine State Route 113 is a road that goes right through Evans Notch. This scenic road connects the town of Fryeburg in the south, which is on the Saco River, to Gilead in the north, which is on the Androscoggin River. It's a popular route for enjoying the mountain scenery.

Surrounding Mountains

Evans Notch is surrounded by impressive mountains. To the west of the highest point in the notch, you'll find West Royce Mountain and East Royce Mountain. West Royce Mountain is about 3,200 feet (975 meters) high, and its top is in New Hampshire. East Royce Mountain is about 3,114 feet (949 meters) high and is located in Maine. These two mountains are part of a larger group called the Baldface-Royce Range. To the east of the notch, there's Speckled Mountain, which is about 2,906 feet (886 meters) high.

Hiking Trails

Evans Notch is a great spot for outdoor adventures, especially hiking! Many hiking trails start right from the notch.

  • To the west: You can find trails like the Royce Trail, Laughing Lion Trail, and East Royce Trail. These trails lead up the Royce Mountains.
  • To the east: The Bickford Brook Trail and Spruce Hill Trail will take you onto the Speckled Mountain area.

These trails offer amazing views and a chance to explore the beautiful White Mountains.
