South Bristol is a small town located in Ontario County, New York, United States. In 2020, about 1,651 people lived there. The town got its name because it was created from a part of the nearby Town of Bristol.

The Town of South Bristol is in the southwestern part of Ontario County. It is known for being the smallest town in the county based on its population.

Exploring South Bristol's Past

South Bristol was once part of a large land deal called the Phelps and Gorham Purchase. People started settling here in 1789, the same year Ontario County was formed.

The Town of South Bristol officially began in 1838. It was created when it separated from the Town of Bristol.

Two important historical places in South Bristol are listed on the National Register of Historic Places. These are the South Bristol Grange Hall 1107 and the Wilder Cemetery.

South Bristol's Location and Landscape

South Bristol covers a total area of about 42 square miles (108.8 square kilometers). Most of this area, about 39.1 square miles (100.9 square kilometers), is land. The rest, about 3.0 square miles (7.9 square kilometers), is water.

The eastern border of the town is formed by Canandaigua Lake. This lake also marks the border with Yates County.

Two main highways, NY 21 and NY 64, cross through the town. They meet in a place called Bristol Springs.

The town also has deep valleys created by two creeks, Mud Creek and Mill Creek. These valleys run from north to south.

Neighboring Towns and Areas

South Bristol shares its western border with the Town of Richmond, which includes Honeoye Lake. To the south, you'll find the Town of Naples. The Town of Bristol is to the north. Across Canandaigua Lake to the east is the Town of Middlesex in Yates County.

  • Covel Corners – A small village in the northeast part of the town, near NY-21.
  • Gulick – A small village in the southwest part of the town.
  • Seneca Point – A small village northeast of Boswell Corners.
  • South Bristol – This is the main village of South Bristol. It's located on NY-64 and near Mud Creek.
  • Woodville – A village right by Canandaigua Lake, at the southern border of the town on NY-21.
  • WNBL Broadcast Tower – A historic radio tower used for the Rural Radio Network in the 1950s. The radio station WNBL is licensed to the town and uses this tower.

Parting of the Ways - This is a local nickname for the area where Route 21 and Route 64 meet in South Bristol.
