History of the South County Museum
How the Museum Started
The South County Museum first opened its doors in 1933. It began in North Kingstown, a town in Rhode Island. The very first items collected by the museum were kept in a barn. This barn was located in a place called Wickford.
Moving to New Homes
After just one year, the museum needed more space. So, it moved to a new spot. This new home was the Knight Farm, also in North Kingstown. It was on a road called Scrabbletown Road.
In 1984, the museum moved again. This time, it found its permanent home. It moved to Canonchet Farm in Narragansett. This farm has its own interesting history. It used to belong to Colonel William Sprague. He was an important person in Rhode Island's past. Colonel Sprague was once the governor of Rhode Island.
