South Fallsburg is a hamlet and census-designated place in Sullivan County, New York, United States. South Fallsburg is located within the Town of Fallsburg at 41°42′59″N 74°37′49″W / 41.71639°N 74.63028°W / 41.71639; -74.63028 (41.716489, -74.630279).

Geography

South Fallsburg is located at 41°42′59″N 74°37′49″W / 41.71639°N 74.63028°W / 41.71639; -74.63028 (41.716489, -74.630279). South Fallsburg is bordered by the Hamlet of Hurleyville, the Hamlet of Fallsburg or Old Falls and the Village of Monticello.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 6.1 square miles (15.9 km²), of which, 6.0 square miles (15.5 km²) of it is land and 0.1 square miles (0.4 km²) of it (2.28%) is water.

Demographics

As of the 2000 United States Census, there were 2,061 people, 670 households, and 424 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 343.7 per square mile (132.6/km²). There were 1,181 housing units at an average density of 197.0/sq mi (76.0/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 73.61% White, 17.95% African American, 0.34% Native American, 1.02% Asian, 0.10% Pacific Islander, 4.46% from other races, and 2.52% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 14.80% of the population.

There were 670 households out of which 35.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 42.4% were married couples living together, 17.5% had a female householder with no husband present, and 36.6% were non-families. 29.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.80 and the average family size was 3.58.

In the CDP, the population was spread out with 32.2% under the age of 18, 14.6% from 18 to 24, 22.6% from 25 to 44, 19.5% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 28 years. For every 100 females there were 112.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 104.2 males.

The median income for a household in the CDP was $24,063, and the median income for a family was $30,938. Males had a median income of $31,250 versus $23,333 for females. The per capita income for the CDP was $14,144. About 19.7% of families and 26.0% of the population were below the poverty line, including 42.5% of those under age 18 and 16.2% of those age 65 or over.

History

South Fallsburg is in the heart of the Catskills Borscht Belt resort area. In its heyday there were numerous summer hotels, bungalow colonies, and boarding houses.

The Raleigh Hotel & Resort on Heiden Road is a 320-room Glatt Kosher Cholov Yisrael hotel for Hasidic Jews sitting on 200 acres (0.81 km2), and also serves as a convention center for religious and nonreligious groups. The town's largest employer is Murray's Chickens, a poultry company that raises all vegetable fed natural chickens. The chickens themselves are raised on select family farms in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.

The Rivoli Theatre and South Fallsburg Hebrew Association Synagogue are listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

South Fallsburg is home to singer-songwriters Gavin and Joey DeGraw, librarian Sari Feldman, jazz pianist and composer Kenny Werner, and Yeshiva Gedolah Zichron Moshe.
