Exploring South Londonderry Village
South Londonderry Village is found in the middle of Londonderry, Vermont. It sits right next to the West River. This river flows towards the Connecticut River. A main road, Vermont Route 100, goes through the village. It follows the river closely.
The village has several streets that run along the river. Main Street is on the north side. Winhall Hollow Road and West River Road are on the south side. There is one bridge in the center of the village. Melendy Hill Road and Middletown Road meet this bridge.
How the Village Grew
This village started to grow in the early 1800s. The river here had a good drop in height. This made it perfect for water power. Water power helped run early factories and mills. Today, most of these old factory sites are just foundations. Some even date back to the early 1900s.
Three dams were built across the river. The biggest one is just upstream from the main bridge. The village is surrounded by steep hills. This meant buildings had to be built in a line along the river.
Buildings from the Past
Most of the houses in the district are made of wood. They are usually 1.5 to 2.5 stories tall. Many have simple decorations from 19th-century building styles.
You can also find two old church buildings from the 1800s. There are also two former school buildings. The Londonderry Town House was built in 1860. It holds town offices and spaces for meetings and events.
