The Londonderry Town House, also known as the Londonderry Town Hall, is like the main office building for the town of Londonderry, Vermont. It's where important town meetings happen. You can find it on Middletown Road in the small village of South Londonderry.

This building was built way back in 1860. It's special because its design shows how town halls have changed over more than 100 years. Because it's so important, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1983.

What is the Londonderry Town House?

The town of Londonderry is in the northwestern part of Windham County. It sits near the Green Mountains. The main area for town business is in the village of South Londonderry. This is where Vermont Route 100 crosses the West River.

Even though the town offices are now in a different spot, the old town hall is still used. People meet there for annual town meetings and other community events. It stands on Middletown Street, just north of Route 100.

How the Building Looks

The Londonderry Town House is a two-story building made of wood. It has been changed a few times over the years with new parts added. The main part of the building is shaped like a rectangle. It has a roof that slopes down on two sides, facing the front.

There's also a two-part bell tower right at the front of this section. In front of that, you'll see a rectangular entrance area with a sloped roof. This front part has five window sections and two stories. A porch with a sloped roof covers the main entrance. An extra section extends from the back of the building, with even more additions coming off it.

History of the Londonderry Town House

The main part of the Londonderry Town House was built in 1860. Back then, it was a typical town hall for New England. It had a big room with a balcony on the second floor. This room was used for town meetings and social gatherings. It was a central spot for the community.

Changes Over Time

By the late 1800s, the hall started being used for plays and shows. Both local groups and traveling performers used the stage. Because of this, the building was made longer at the back.

In the early 1900s, the front entrance area was added. This new part had space for a ticket office and other useful things. Most of the inside of the hall looks like it did during this time. A cool feature is the canvas stage curtain, which shows a picture of the Rhine River.

For a while, the town offices were located in this building. Today, it's still an important place. It continues to host the yearly town meetings, keeping its history alive.
