Kids Encyclopedia Facts

The South Mountains are a group of mountains found mostly in White Pine County, Nevada. A smaller part of them also stretches into Juab County, Utah. These mountains are sometimes called the Deep Creek Mountains or the Ibenpah Mountains.

Where Are the South Mountains?

The South Mountains are located in the western United States. They are like a natural border between different areas. To the south, they are separated from the Kern Mountains by a place called Tippett Canyon on the west side and Pleasant Valley on the east.

To the east, the South Mountains are divided from the Deep Creek Range in Utah. This separation happens through Johnson Canyon in the north and Water Canyon in the south. On their northern side, the mountains meet Spring Creek Flat. To the west, they are next to Antelope Valley.

What is the Highest Point?

The tallest spot in the South Mountains is a peak that doesn't have a special name. This peak reaches a height of 9,724 feet (which is about 2,964 meters) above sea level. You can find this high point in Nevada at these coordinates: 39°45′16″N 114°03′10″W / 39.75444°N 114.05278°W / 39.75444; -114.05278. Imagine standing on top and looking out over the vast landscape!
