South Peru is a neighborhood located within the city of Peru, Indiana. It is part of Washington Township in Miami County.
History
South Peru was officially planned and mapped out in 1873. The name "South Peru" came from its location. It was directly across the Wabash River from the main city of Peru.
By 1887, South Peru had grown quite a bit. It was home to a sawmill, which cut wood. There were also several shops and other businesses. In 1914, South Peru became an official part of the city of Peru. This process is called annexation.
Geography
South Peru is found in the northern part of Washington Township. The Wabash River acts as a natural border. It separates South Peru from the rest of the city of Peru.
