The South River is a cool waterway located in the state of Virginia in the United States. It flows for about 20.3 miles (which is about 32.7 kilometers). This river is a "tributary," meaning it's a smaller river that flows into a larger one. The South River joins the Maury River.

The water from the South River eventually makes its way to the James River. This means the South River is part of the larger "watershed" of the James River. A watershed is like a big bowl where all the rain and snow that falls in an area drains into one main river.

The River's Journey

The South River begins its journey in Augusta County, Virginia. It starts in the southwestern part of the county, close to the bottom of the famous Blue Ridge Mountains.

Where the River Starts

Imagine the river starting as tiny streams. These streams come together near a place called Lofton. Soon after it begins, the South River gets more water from another river. This is the Saint Marys River, which flows out of the mountains from the east.

Flowing Through Counties

As the South River continues its path, it flows southwest. It then enters Rockbridge County. You can find it near a small village named Vesuvius in this county.

Joining Another River

The South River keeps moving southwest until it meets its end. It joins the Maury River. This meeting point is located between two towns: Lexington and Buena Vista. So, the South River is like a helper river, bringing its water to the Maury River!
