Club History
The South Western Football Club started in 1875. Their first known game was against Govan F.C. in December of that year.
The club joined the Scottish Football Association in 1876. This allowed them to play in the Scottish Cup, which is a big football competition. They played in the Scottish Cup every year from 1876 to 1883.
Scottish Cup Achievements
South Western reached the quarter-finals of the Scottish Cup twice. This was their best result in the competition.
In the 1877–78 season, they won their quarter-final match against 3rd Lanarkshire Rifle Volunteers. However, the other team complained that the ropes around the field were not strong enough. They said this caused problems during the game. The Scottish FA agreed and made the teams play the match again. South Western lost the replayed game 2-1. They complained about this decision, but it didn't change anything.
The club reached the quarter-finals again in 1879–80. This time, they lost 6-1 to Pollokshields Athletic.
In the 1880–81 season, South Western played against Arthurlie in the third round. They lost 4-3. But South Western complained that the last 30 minutes of the game were played in the dark. They said it was hard to see what was happening. The Scottish FA agreed, and the game was replayed. In the replayed match, South Western scored a goal right at the end to make it a draw. But then, South Western was removed from the competition for a reason that is not known.
The End of the Club
In April 1883, South Western joined the new Glasgow Football Association. However, they played their last Scottish Cup game in September of that year. They lost 8-1 to Battlefield in the first round.
Soon after, there were talks about South Western joining another local club called Pilgrims. Some South Western players had already been playing for Pilgrims. Within a few months, South Western joined Pilgrims. Pilgrims then started using South Western's home field, Copeland Park.
A new club with the same name appeared in the area in 1885. This club was a mix of two local teams, Beaconsfield and Woodbourne. They joined the Scottish Junior Football Association a year later and played until 1894.
Team Colours
When the club first started, their uniforms were black and orange striped shirts. They also wore white shorts.
In 1878, they changed their colours to red and white. Then, in 1880, they changed again to navy blue shirts and white shorts.
Home Ground
The South Western Football Club played their home games at Copeland Park. This field was in a place called Govan, near the Ibrox railway station.
The club had planned to move to a new field in 1876, but they ended up staying at Copeland Park.
