How the Living Quilt Helps

This website is a project of the Southern AIDS Coalition. This group is a non-profit organization. It includes government people, companies, and community helpers. The Living Quilt shares real stories. It uses video interviews. These videos feature women living with HIV/AIDS. They also show healthcare workers and people who support patients in the South. More than 80 women have shared their stories. They come from 13 southern states. These states include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia and Washington, D.C..

Important Voices

Many important people have taken part in the Living Quilt. One is Dr. Bambi W. Gaddist. She is a CNN Hero. She works with the South Carolina HIV/AIDS Council. This group hosted an event for the Living Quilt. It was to mark National Black HIV/AIDS Awareness Day. Also, state AIDS directors from several states have joined. These include Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, Maryland, North Carolina, Virginia, and Washington, D.C.

A Special Milestone

On May 13, 2009, the Living Quilt added its 100th "patch." This patch featured Frances Ashe-Goins. She is a leader at the United States Department of Health and Human Services. This special moment happened during National Women's Health Week.

Different from Other Quilts

It is important to know that the Southern AIDS Living Quilt is a separate project. It is different from the famous NAMES Project AIDS Memorial Quilt. Both are important, but they are not the same.

Why the South?

The South has a high number of adults and teens living with AIDS. This makes the Living Quilt's work very important there. Also, HIV/AIDS affects African Americans more than other groups in the U.S. The Living Quilt helps bring attention to this issue. It works to support these communities.
