The Southern Cone Mesopotamian savanna, also known as the Argentine Mesopotamian grasslands, is a special type of grassland found in Argentina and southern Paraguay. It's a unique natural area where water often covers the land.
What is this Savanna?
This ecoregion is a large natural area that covers about 77,600 square kilometers (29,960 square miles). You can find it west of the Uruguay River in Argentina's Corrientes Province, stretching north into Misiones Province. It also extends into parts of southern Paraguay.
Plants of the Savanna
The Southern Cone Mesopotamian savanna is like a patchwork quilt of different natural habitats. You'll find:
- Vast grasslands that get wet during certain times of the year.
- Marshes, which are wetlands with lots of grasses and reeds.
- Woodlands, areas with many trees.
- Gallery forests, which are strips of forest that grow along rivers and streams.
This mix of habitats means there's a wide variety of plants that can grow here, adapting to the wet and dry seasons.
Animals of the Savanna
This savanna is a very important place for birds. It's known as an endemic bird area, which means it's home to bird species found nowhere else in the world.
- There are three bird species that live only in this savanna.
- Sadly, two of these unique bird species are currently considered threatened, meaning their populations are at risk.
The savanna's mix of grasslands, marshes, and forests provides a home for many different animals, from small insects to larger mammals like the Capybara shown in the picture.
