Southwind Vineyard & Winery is a special farm in Deerfield Township, New Jersey. It's known for growing grapes and making wine. This place has been a family horse farm since 1978. The first grapevines were planted in 2006. Southwind Vineyard then opened its doors to visitors in 2012. Today, they grow grapes on about 4 acres of land. They produce around 800 cases of wine each year. The name "Southwind" reminds us of the original owners' roots in the Southern United States. They wanted to share a warm, friendly feeling, just like "Southern hospitality."
What Grapes They Grow
Southwind Vineyard is located in an area called the Outer Coastal Plain AVA. This is a special region for growing grapes. They grow many different types of grapes to make their wines.
Some of the grapes they grow include:
- Cabernet Franc
- Cabernet Sauvignon
- Chambourcin
- Chardonnay
- Concord
- Malbec
- Merlot
- Muscat blanc
- Viognier
Besides grape wines, Southwind also makes tasty fruit wines. These are made from fruits like limes and peaches.
Fun Things to Do at Southwind
Southwind Vineyard is not just about grapes and wine. It's also a great place for horse lovers! The farm offers horse boarding. This means people can keep their horses there. They also have an activity called hunter pacing. This is a fun horseback riding event where riders follow a set course.
A special part of Southwind is their focus on Lipizzan horses. These are famous, beautiful white horses known for their grace and strength. You might even see some of these amazing horses when you visit!
Southwind Vineyard is part of some groups that help wine farms. They are a member of the Garden State Wine Growers Association. They also belong to the Outer Coastal Plain Vineyard Association. These groups help farms work together and share ideas.
