Soyuz MS-16 →

Soyuz MS-15 was a special space mission that launched on September 25, 2019. It used a Soyuz spacecraft to carry three astronauts to the International Space Station (ISS). This flight was important because it was the 143rd time a Soyuz spacecraft carried a crew. It was also the very last flight of the Soyuz-FG rocket, which was replaced by a newer rocket called Soyuz-2. The launch happened from a famous spot called Gagarin's Start at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan. This site was then updated for the new Soyuz-2 rocket.

The crew on Soyuz MS-15 included a Russian commander, an American flight engineer, and the first astronaut from the United Arab Emirates (UAE). To celebrate this big event, pictures of the Soyuz rocket and the Emirati astronaut, Hazza Al Mansouri, were shown on the Burj Khalifa. This is the tallest building in the world, located in Dubai!

Meet the Crew of Soyuz MS-15

The Soyuz MS-15 mission carried three main crew members into space. They had different roles during their journey to the International Space Station.

Launching Crew Members

  • Commander: Oleg Skripochka from Roscosmos, Russia. This was his third and final space flight. He was part of Expedition 61 and 62 on the ISS.
  • Flight Engineer 1: Jessica Meir from NASA, USA. This was her first time in space. She was also part of Expedition 61 and 62.
  • Spaceflight Participant / Flight Engineer 2: Hazza Al Mansouri from the MBRSC, UAE. He was the first astronaut from the UAE to go to space. This was his first flight. He stayed on the ISS for a shorter time.

Landing Crew Member

When the Soyuz MS-15 returned to Earth, one of the original crew members, Hazza Al Mansouri, was replaced by another astronaut for the journey back.

  • Landing Crew Member: Andrew Morgan from NASA, USA. He was part of Expeditions 60, 61, and 62 on the ISS.

Backup Crew Members

Sometimes, astronauts are chosen as "backup" crew. They train just like the main crew, in case someone from the main crew cannot fly.

  • Commander: Sergey Ryzhikov from Roscosmos, Russia.
  • Flight Engineer: Thomas Marshburn from NASA, USA.
  • Spaceflight Participant: Sultan Al Neyadi from the MBRSC, UAE.
