Becoming a Cosmonaut
Oleg Skripochka was born into a soldier's family. He lived in different places as a child, including Nevinnomyssk and Zaporizhia. After finishing high school in 1987, he went to the Bauman Moscow State Technical University.
In 1993, he graduated as a mechanical engineer. His studies focused on building rockets.
Early Career
From 1987 to 1993, Skripochka worked at Energia. This was a scientific-industrial company. He started as a test-metal worker and then became a technician.
After university, he worked as an engineer at Energia RSC. He helped develop vehicles that transport cargo and people in space.
Joining Roscosmos
In 1997, Oleg Skripochka was chosen to become a test cosmonaut. He then spent almost two years training for space missions.
He trained as a backup crew member for Expedition 17 to the ISS. Later, he trained for Expedition 25/26.
Space Missions
Oleg Skripochka has flown to the International Space Station three times. Each trip involved living and working in orbit for many months.
Expedition 25/26
Skripochka launched into space on October 7, 2010. He was part of the Expedition 25/26 crew. They traveled aboard the Soyuz TMA-01M spacecraft. His crewmates were cosmonaut Aleksandr Kaleri and NASA astronaut Scott Kelly.
They arrived at the ISS on October 10, 2010. Skripochka stayed on the ISS until March 2011. During this mission, the crew did many scientific experiments. They studied physics, crystal growth, and even how the human body changes in space. They also did educational activities.
After 159 days in space, Skripochka returned to Earth on March 16, 2011. The Soyuz capsule landed in Kazakhstan. The weather was very cold and windy at the landing site.
Spacewalks
Oleg Skripochka completed three spacewalks during his time on the ISS. These spacewalks are also called EVAs (Extravehicular Activities).
Russian EVA #26
On November 15, 2010, Skripochka did his first spacewalk. He was with fellow cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin. They spent six hours and 27 minutes outside the ISS. Skripochka wore a spacesuit with blue stripes.
During this spacewalk, they removed old science experiments. They also installed new equipment on the station's modules. They even looked for tiny organisms under the station's insulation.
Russian EVA #27
Skripochka's second spacewalk was on January 21, 2011. This time, he worked with cosmonaut Dmitri Kondratyev. Their main goal was to install a new high-speed data system. This system helps send large amounts of data from the station to Earth.
They also removed an old experiment that studied how the space station affects the Earth's atmosphere. They installed a new camera for one of the station's modules. The spacewalk lasted over five hours.
Russian EVA #28
On February 16, 2011, Skripochka and Kondratyev did their third spacewalk together. They installed a radio antenna and launched a small satellite. They also set up two new experiments.
One experiment measured gamma rays and light from lightning on Earth. Another was for the high-speed data system. They also collected panels from an experiment that exposed materials to space conditions.
Expedition 47/48
Skripochka returned to space on March 19, 2016. He launched aboard Soyuz TMA-20M. He was part of the Expedition 47/48 crew.
Expedition 61/62
Oleg Skripochka's third mission began on September 25, 2019. He launched on Soyuz MS-15. He was a member of Expedition 61 and Expedition 62. He came back to Earth on April 17, 2020.
