Becoming a Cosmonaut
Oleg Skripochka grew up in a soldier's family. He lived in different cities, including Nevinnomyssk and Zaporizhia. After finishing high school in 1987, he went to Bauman Moscow State Technical University. He studied rocket construction and became a mechanical engineer in 1993.
Early Career and Training
Before becoming a cosmonaut, Skripochka worked as a technician. From 1993 to 1997, he helped design transport and cargo vehicles. These vehicles are important for sending supplies to space.
In 1997, Oleg Skripochka was chosen to become a test cosmonaut. He spent two years learning advanced space training. He also trained as a backup crew member for an ISS mission. Later, he trained to be a flight engineer for the ISS Expedition 25/26.
Space Missions
Oleg Skripochka has flown to the International Space Station three times. Each mission involved living and working in space for many months.
First Mission: Expedition 25/26
Oleg Skripochka's first space mission began on October 7, 2010. He launched from Baikonur Cosmodrome aboard the Soyuz TMA-01M spacecraft. He traveled with cosmonaut Aleksandr Kaleri and NASA astronaut Scott Kelly.
They arrived at the ISS on October 10, 2010. Skripochka worked as a Flight Engineer for Expedition 25 and Expedition 26. During his time on the ISS, he helped with many science experiments. These included studies on physics and how crystals grow in space.
After 159 days, Skripochka returned to Earth on March 16, 2011. The Soyuz capsule landed in Kazakhstan. The weather was very cold and windy, but the crew was safely pulled from the capsule.
Spacewalks: Working Outside the ISS
During his first mission, Oleg Skripochka completed three spacewalks. Spacewalks are also called Extravehicular Activities (EVAs). They allow astronauts to work outside the space station.
Spacewalk 1: Russian EVA #26
On November 15, 2010, Skripochka did his first spacewalk. He worked with fellow cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin. They spent over six hours outside the ISS. They removed old science experiments and installed new equipment. They also checked for tiny organisms under the station's insulation.
Spacewalk 2: Russian EVA #27
His second spacewalk was on January 21, 2011, with cosmonaut Dmitri Kondratyev. This spacewalk lasted over five hours. They installed a new system to send data from the station very quickly. They also removed an old experiment and installed a new camera for a module called Rassvet.
Spacewalk 3: Russian EVA #28
On February 16, 2011, Skripochka and Kondratyev did their third spacewalk together. Their tasks included installing a radio antenna. They also deployed a small satellite. They set up two new experiments and collected panels from another experiment.
Second Mission: Expedition 47/48
Oleg Skripochka went back to space on March 19, 2016. He launched aboard Soyuz TMA-20M. He was part of the Expedition 47 and Expedition 48 crews.
Third Mission: Expedition 61/62
Skripochka's third mission started on September 25, 2019. He launched on Soyuz MS-15 to the International Space Station. He was a member of Expedition 61 and Expedition 62. He returned to Earth on April 17, 2020.
