Building the Ship
Infanta Isabelin 1893
The Infanta Isabel was built in Cadiz, Spain. This was done at a naval shipyard. The first part of its construction, called laying the keel, happened in 1883.
The ship was launched into the water on June 24, 1885. It was fully finished and ready for use in 1887. The Infanta Isabel had a strong iron body. It also had one tall funnel for smoke.
The ship was designed to use both steam power and sails. It was rigged like a barque, which means it had a specific type of sailing mast setup.
Important Journeys
In May 1893, the Infanta Isabel took part in a special trip. It carried Infanta Eulalia of Spain, a Spanish princess, to the United States.
The princess first visited Puerto Rico and Havana, Cuba. Then, on May 18, she arrived in New York aboard the Infanta Isabel. From New York, she traveled to Washington, D.C.. There, she met President Grover Cleveland at the White House.
The Infanta Isabel stayed in New York for a big event. It was part of the Grand Naval Review, where many warships gathered.
In early 1903, the ship went to Morocco. Its job was to protect Spanish citizens and their interests there. This was during a time of unrest in the country.
Later Years
The Infanta Isabel was updated in 1911. By 1921, its weapons had changed. It had one 66 mm (2.6 in) gun and ten 57 mm (2.2 in) guns. The number of crew members also grew to 194.
The ship was removed from service in 1927. This is called being "stricken." The Infanta Isabel was the longest-lasting ship of its type.
