Sparta is a small place in Chickasaw County, Mississippi, in the United States. It is an unincorporated community. This means it is a settlement that is not part of an official city or town. It does not have its own local government.

History of Sparta

Sparta was once a busy little community. It had two churches where people could gather. There was also a school for children to learn. A post office helped people send and receive mail. This post office was open from 1850 until 1905.

The Spartan Band

During the American Civil War, a group of soldiers was formed in Sparta. They were called "The Spartan Band." These soldiers joined the 13th Mississippi Infantry Regiment on March 23, 1861. They were part of the Army of Northern Virginia. This army fought in many important battles. Some of these battles included First Manassas, Fredericksburg, and Gettysburg. They also fought in the Chickamauga and the Appomattox campaign.

Sparta in Movies

You might have heard of a movie called In the Heat of the Night. This film came out in 1967. The story in the movie is set in a town named Sparta. However, the movie was not actually filmed in Sparta, Mississippi. It was filmed in and around Sparta, Illinois, which is a different place.
