About Spasmodic Geyser
Spasmodic Geyser is a fountain geyser and a cone geyser. This means it can shoot water high into the air from different openings. It's located in the famous Upper Geyser Basin, which is home to many other amazing geysers.
How Spasmodic Geyser Erupts
Spasmodic Geyser has two main openings, or craters, where water can shoot up to 15 feet (4.6 m) high! That's like a two-story building! Besides these two main spots, there are about 20 smaller vents. Water can erupt from these smaller vents too, from just a few inches to ten feet high.
The eruptions from Spasmodic Geyser are a bit "spasmodic," which means they are irregular and not always on a set schedule. However, most of the time, you can expect an eruption every 1 to 3 hours. The water coming out is super hot, around 92 °C (198 °F)! That's almost boiling!
Why It's Called "Spasmodic"
The geyser got its name from A.C. Peale, who was part of a survey team in 1878. He named it "Spasmodic" because of its "erratic" or unpredictable eruptions. It's like the geyser can't quite make up its mind when to burst!
Its Geyser Neighbors
Spasmodic Geyser is connected underground to other geysers nearby. One of its neighbors is the smaller Penta Geyser. It's interesting because when Penta Geyser is erupting, Spasmodic Geyser usually stays quiet. But often, if Spasmodic Geyser starts erupting, it means that Sawmill Geyser and Penta Geyser might erupt soon after! It's like they're all talking to each other underground.
