Speigletown's Past: A Look at Its History

How Speigletown Began

The first people settled permanently in this area around 1668. In May 1976, the land was surveyed. The original name of the area, Dort, was changed to Speigletown. It is not clear why the spelling of Speigletown does not exactly match the name of the VanDerSpiegel family.

In 1819, a part of the town of Schaghticoke became part of Lansingburgh. This area included the hamlet of Speigletown. The hamlet got its name from the Vanderspiegel families. They were early Dutch settlers in the southern part of the Schaghticoke area.

Where Speigletown Was and Is Now

Originally, Speigletown was located where the Northern Turnpike met what is now Fogarty Road. In those early days, the hamlet had a church, a school house, and a cemetery.

Today, the area known as Speigletown starts unofficially around the Firehouse on New York State Route 40. This is just north of Troy. It stretches a little north of Fogarty Road. The lower part of modern Speigletown used to be land owned by Bedford Filkins and Cornelius Lansing. Cornelius Lansing's land was sold to Ai Pine in 1856.

School Improvements

In February 2008, people living in the Lansingburgh Central School District voted in Speigletown. They approved a plan for almost $3 million to improve the school buildings. This shows how the community supports its local schools.
