Spencer Lake is a beautiful lake located in Maine, a state in the northeastern United States. It stretches south from Fish Pond, crossing into different areas of Maine. This lake is an important part of the local water system.

Spencer Lake is known for its clear waters and the different types of fish that live there. It's a great spot for people who enjoy fishing and being outdoors.

Where is Spencer Lake?

Spencer Lake is found in Somerset County, Maine. It is partly in Hobbstown township and partly in Maine township 3, range 5. The lake is about 5 miles (8.0 km) long and 1 kilometre (1,100 yd) wide.

How Water Flows In and Out

The northern part of Spencer Lake gets its water from several smaller ponds and bogs. These include Whipple Bog, Whipple Pond, Hall Pond, Toby Pond, and Chub Pond. All this water flows into Fish Pond first, and then into Spencer Lake.

Water leaves Spencer Lake from its southern end. It flows into a stream called Little Spencer Stream. This stream then joins Spencer Stream, which travels about 6 miles (9.7 km) to the Dead River. The Dead River eventually meets the Kennebec River at a place called The Forks.

Fish and Wildlife

Spencer Lake is home to several kinds of fish. It has a natural population of two popular fish:

  • Lake trout: These are large, cold-water fish.
  • Brook trout: These are smaller, colorful fish often found in clear, cool streams and lakes.

Besides these native fish, the lake has also been stocked with land-locked Atlantic salmon. This means that young Atlantic salmon, which usually live in the ocean, have been placed in the lake. They adapt to living in fresh water.

Visiting Spencer Lake

If you want to visit Spencer Lake, there is a special area for launching boats. This boat launch is located at the northern end of the lake.

To get there, you need to drive about 2 miles (3.2 km) on a gravel road. This gravel road is about 11 miles (18 km) west of U.S. Route 201 near Parlin Pond. It's a good place for outdoor activities like fishing and boating.
