Spencer O’Brien (born February 2, 1988) is a talented Canadian snowboarder. She was born in Alert Bay, British Columbia. Spencer is also of Indigenous descent, belonging to the Haida and Kwakwaka’wakw First Nations.
She is known for her amazing skills on the snowboard. Spencer won a gold medal in slopestyle at the 2013 FIS Snowboarding World Championships. She has also earned five medals at the Winter X Games, including one gold, one silver, and three bronze.
Spencer O'Brien is recognized as one of the world's best female snowboarders. In 2012, she became the champion of the World Snowboard Tour. Before the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia, Spencer was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis. Even though she faced this challenge, she competed in the Olympics.
Spencer's Snowboarding Journey
Spencer O'Brien grew up in Courtenay, a city on Vancouver Island on the West Coast of Canada. She started skiing when she was only two years old. When she turned 11, she decided to switch to snowboarding.
In 2008, Spencer was named Transworld's Rookie of the Year. This was a big achievement early in her career. She continued to compete at a high level. For example, during the 2016–17 FIS Snowboard World Cup, Spencer won a silver medal.
In 2017, Spencer earned a bronze medal in the snowboarding slopestyle event. This happened at the Burton US Open in Vail, Colorado.
X Games Achievements
Spencer O'Brien has been a regular competitor in the Women's slopestyle event at the X Games since 2007. She has won five X Games medals. Her first gold medal came in 2016, during her eleventh appearance at the X Games.
A special moment for Spencer happened in 2015. She became the first woman to successfully land a "Backside 900" trick in an X Games competition. This showed her incredible skill and courage in the sport.
