Erie Canal Bridge in Spencerport
Erie Canal Bridge in Spencerport

The story of Spencerport began in 1804 when Daniel Spencer bought a farm. This farm was special because the Erie Canal was planned to pass right through it! When the canal opened, parts of the farm were sold to create the first village lots.

Because it was a port on the canal, the area was first called Spencer's Basin. Later, its name was changed to Spencerport.

On April 22, 1867, Spencerport officially became a village, recognized by the New York State Legislature. William Slayton was chosen as its very first mayor.

The Spencerport Methodist Church is an important historical building. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 2008, which means it's recognized for its special history and architecture.
