Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Spindles Farm was a farm located in Hyde Heath, near Amersham, Buckinghamshire, England. It was run by a horse dealer named James Gray, also known as Jamie Gray. In 2008, this farm became known for a very serious case of animal cruelty. Many horses were found neglected, and some had even starved to death. A judge later called this incident "the worst case ever experienced by the RSPCA."

Discovering the Animal Neglect

Inspectors from the RSPCA visited Spindles Farm on January 4, 2008. They found more than 125 horses, ponies, and donkeys living in terrible conditions. Sadly, they also discovered 32 dead horses among the living ones.

A Big Rescue Operation

The RSPCA quickly started a huge rescue mission. They worked with World Horse Welfare and Redwings Horse Sanctuary. This rescue took eight days because so many animals were involved and they were in such poor health.

On January 12 and 13, 2008, 115 horses and ponies were safely removed from the farm. Some other animals were too sick and had to be put down at the site.

After seeing the conditions in the fields, it wasn't until I went into the yard that the enormity of it hit me. There were dead horses on the ground in front of me, and to the right. I looked across there was a dead horse in the stalls. It was like walking into another world. There were none of the normal noises I associate with a stable yard - horses moving about, eating, drinking, calling out to one another or the gentle noises that horses make when approached, expecting to be fed or cared for. They were totally silent. Even the horses that appeared in better bodily condition seemed to be depressed, almost as if they had lost their dignity.

During these two days, a nine-year-old girl named Katy Roberts held a quiet protest outside the farm gates. Katy has hemiplegia. She was protesting the alleged cruelty. Later, she also protested outside the court hearing and even created a website to share what happened.

What Happened in Court?

In June 2009, the farm owner, James John Gray (Jamie Gray), was found guilty. He was sentenced to six months in prison and had to pay a large fine of £400,000. He was also banned from owning horses for the rest of his life. This was the strongest punishment the court could give for not caring for animals properly and for causing them suffering.

Other Family Members Involved

James Gray's son, James Junior, was also found guilty of similar charges. He received an 18-month supervision order and a ten-year ban from keeping horses. James Gray's wife, Julie, and his two young daughters, Jodie and Cordelia, were also found guilty of not protecting the animals. They were all banned from keeping horses for ten years and had to do community service.

Appeals and Arrest

The family tried to appeal their sentences in May 2010. However, the convictions for James Gray, his wife, and his daughters were upheld. James Junior was found not guilty of two charges but remained guilty of the others.

James Gray did not show up for his sentencing on May 12, 2010. He was later arrested two weeks later on May 26, during a police check near Bromsgrove, Worcestershire.
