The Spirit River is a river found in northern Alberta, Canada. Its name comes from the Cree words Chepe Sepi. These words mean "ghost" or "spirit."

The town of Spirit River is located very close to the river. It was named after the river. Other places also share the river's name. These include the Municipal District of Spirit River No. 133 and the Spirit River Formation. This formation is a special layer of rock deep underground.

The Journey of Spirit River

The Spirit River begins its journey in a place called Spirit Ridge. This spot is about 25 kilometres (16 miles) southwest of the town of Spirit River. It starts at a high point, about 920 metres (3,018 feet) above sea level.

Where the River Flows

From its start, the river flows towards the east. It travels through the area known as the Municipal District of Spirit River No. 133. The river then passes by the town of Rycroft. It also flows south of the Birch Hills, entering Birch Hills County.

Where the River Ends

Finally, the Spirit River flows into the Saddle River. This happens at a lower elevation, about 440 metres (1,444 feet) above sea level. The Saddle River is also known as the Burnt River. After flowing for about 25 kilometres (16 miles), the Saddle River then empties into the mighty Peace River. This meeting point is east of Dunvegan.
